Top Gun / Maverick's Large Scale F14A Jet Miniature

Item Code: #15216

Status: Part of our Private Collection.

United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) flies an F-14A Tomcat off USS Enterprise (CVN-65), with Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) as his Radar Intercept Officer (RIO). This is a large scale miniature model F-14A fighter jet that was custom-made by the production for use during filming of Top Gun.

The film utilized real Naval jets for the flying scenes, but many shots would have been unsafe or impossible to achieve with a full-sized aircraft. For these shots, special effects expert Gary Gutierrez was brought in to create and shoot models of the planes in action. Multiple models where created and brought to a hilltop location in Oakland, California. There, the effects team set to capture their needed shots, putting great emphasis on making the footage feel "found" and unstudied. This jet in particular was most likely used for the scene where Maverick and Goose were spinning out to sea.

This model is one of the few that survived that hilltop shoot. Based on the actual F-14A flown in the film, this model has been made with incredible detail and accuracy. It is made of a fiberglass base with sheet plastic pieces attached to the outside of the piece. The canopy window is made of thin plastic that has yellowed slightly from age. Its intricate modelling detail is only heightened by its incredible paint job, giving the piece the look of actual, finished metal. Also of note are the small holes on the nose, tail, and wings, suggesting that the piece was once held by wires.

Additionally, Maverick's 114 number and VF-1 logo appear on both sides of the plane, making it instantly identifiable as Goose and Maverick's ride. The piece is in remarkable condition, with the only noticeable damage being to the front of the canopy, which is cracked and missing a small front piece. It measures an impressive 76" long with a 65" wide wingspan.
